“Now is your turn to speak” is a collective fanzine that represents the conclusion of a three-month cycle of weekly creative writing and self-publishing workshops for adult students of Portuguese as a Foreign Language at the Centro Qualifica of the Agrupamento de Escolas da Lourinhã, Portugal. Participants come from different countries and backgrounds, facing the challenges of learning Portuguese while building their lives in a new country. Developed within the scope of the KULA project, an initiative for social inclusion through culture, promoted by the Municipality of Lourinhã, in partnership with Sombronautas e o Teatro do Inefável – Associação Cultural with funding from the Centro 2030 - Inclusion through Culture program, these workshops focused on collective exercises and cultural exchange where, through writing, collage and reading, students shared their stories while interacting with the Portuguese language.
This fanzine, edited by me and presented to students on May 25, 2026, brings together texts, exercises, reflections, and creative responses to some of the proposals launched during classes and seeks to serve as a resource that participants can continue to use to practice their knowledge of the Portuguese language after completing the course. 50 copies of this collective fanzine were printed in May 2026 in Lourinhã as a way of sharing the results of some of the activities carried out with students from the PLA 2 and PLA 4 classes of Português Língua de Acolhimento 2025/2026, from Centro Qualifica do Agrupamento de Escolas da Lourinhã, and as a way of celebrating the conclusion of their most recent chapter as students who, back to school, courageously open up to learning Portuguese.
We thank all the students and the teachers of the Português Língua de Acolhimento classes PLA1, PLA2 and PLA4 (2025/2026). We would like to thank teachers Sandra Valentim and Rita Neiva Correia for their support, enthusiasm and collaboration throughout all classes. We would also like to give special thanks to Professor Fernanda Santos and Centro Qualifica do Agrupamento de Escolas da Lourinhã for the partnership that helped bring this project to life.
